The Price of Infertility (In Dollar Signs)

Piggy Bank

if you haven’t already figured it out, infertility is not just an emotionally taxing playground. The price of infertility exceeds well beyond the scope of all the anxiety & depression that comes with it (free of charge!) and deep into our wallets as well.

We’re one of the not so lucky couples who do not reside in 1 of the 15 states that require insurance companies to cover infertility diagnosis & treatment. In other words, all cost have came out of our own pockets & will until we end up with those sweet little 6-10 pounds of love.

So what has it cost so far?

  1. Semen Analysis (2 times)                                                                                                                           $350
  2. Consultation fee with fertility Dr                                                                                                                 $250
  3. HSG test                                                                                                                                                    $1000
  4. Fertility Blend Vitamins from GMC                                                                                                             $39.99 + shipping
  5. Pre seed                                                                                                                                                    $20.00
  6. Clomid                                                                                                                                                       $20.00
  7. Upcoming round 1 of IUI                                                                                                                           $500.00

Ending with a total of:                                                                                                                                      $2, 189.99

& we aren’t done, quite the opposite in fact, we’ve only just begun this walk. There are many other couples who’ve already been through countless rounds of IUI, more testing, & then the biggest expense of all, IVF. IVF alone starts out around 10, 000. Let that sink in. Ten.Thousand.Dollars. None of which is covered by your insurance if you’re not luckily residing in 1 of the 15 states were it is covered.

& what about the people who can’t afford to undergo all these testing & treatment options?

Something is very wrong with this-very pricey- picture.

    • I’m sorry to hear you’re going through this as well! I saw a petition to force insurance companies to cover in all states on another blog I follow but I can’t seem to find it now…..if you come across it, let me know! Good luck to you!! ❤

  1. Yep…it totally sucks and is exactly why IVF was taken off the table for us. Technically, we can’t afford IVF or Adoption without going into more debt. However, we chose adoption because although the wait may be long, the end result will be a baby and with IVF there are just no guarantees and the odds just weren’t enough to make us willing to chance it.

  2. It’s so sad that people can’t get the same chance of healthcare due to wealth and where they live.
My fertility treatment has been very slow in progressing but I am so very grateful for the NHS in Scotland and I am more then happy to pay my share in taxes!
Good luck with all your treatment, and I hope something is done, for you and other couples in the future. X
